You must socialise your puppy!
If you’re a new puppy parent, you’ve probably heard this advice countless times. But what does it actually mean?
Many well-meaning owners assume it’s all about dog-to-dog play. So they rush out to introduce their pup to every dog they can find. Others are so eager for positive experiences that they take their tiny puppy to busy parks or chaotic group events—and end up with a fearful or overwhelmed dog.
Here’s the truth:
- Good socialisation isn’t about quantity.
- It’s not just about dogs.
- And it doesn’t mean throwing your puppy in the deep end.

Let’s Redefine Socialisation
Socialisation means safely and positively exposing your puppy to the world around them—new sights, sounds, surfaces, smells, people, objects, and yes, other dogs.
It’s a critical part of raising a well-rounded adult dog. But too much, too fast, or the wrong experiences can do more harm than good.
Over the past 10+ years as a dog trainer, I’ve worked with:
- Dogs who were allowed to play with every dog they saw—and now can’t cope if they’re not allowed to say hello.
- Dogs who were “socialised” at chaotic puppy events—and ended up scared, defensive, or reactive.
- Owners who were told to “just expose them to everything”—but weren’t told how to do that safely.
