If your dog is worried by other dogs, shy around unknown people, chases cars or simply hasn’t perfected their recall yet then hiring a secure dog field is a great option for some exercise instead of a persevering with your normal dog walk. These private hire dog fields enable you to have peace of mind that your dog is not going to evade their recall, or come to face to face with something that will set them off barking and lunging everywhere. For many of my clients the local secure dog fields are a vital part of their behaviour modification plans enabling them to work within their dog’s threshold limits or simply exercise their dog without the added stress that walking in their local environment causes.

But where can you find these safe havens? How do you book them? And what does it cost?

My dogs, Rico (a 6 year old Kokoni cross from Portugal) and Maisy (an 8 year old Jack Russell cross Pug) tested out a few local private hire fields and some of my wonderful clients stepped in to tell us their favourites in the local area too.

Weaver Pet Care

Rico and Maisy at Weaver Pet Care’s Secure Field

Location: Norbury, SY13 4HZ

One of the newest secure fields on our list is Weaver Pet Care. This private hire field is off the beaten track not far from Nantwich or Whitchurch and boasts beautiful views of the Llangollen Canal. This set up is ideal for those clients who want the opportunity to safely exposure their dogs to people passing as depending on the time of year you can see walkers going past on the footpath of the canal, but being safely behind a 5ft high fence and the opposite side of the canal you can practice your “look at them” and “look at me” work with no worry that the walkers will end up too close to you during your training.

One of the best features of this field is their 6ft high double gated entrance meaning you can enter and leave without the worry of your dog(s) escaping past you. Perfect if you need to grab extra treats from the car or tidy up any mess.

Hire is £10 per hour for a maximum of 4 dogs and 1 car.

Bookings can be made directly though their website here:    Site Title – Secure Dog Field (weaverpetcare.co.uk)

Pawesome Paddock

Location: Chester,  CH16PH

Clinical behaviour client Maz heard that Rico and Maisy had been testing out some of the local dog parks, so she asked her human to take her to one and tell us about their trip.

Maz, her sister Flo and their human went to Pawesome Paddock near Chester.

This is one of Maz’s favourite fields.

The fencing and car parking facilities are super secure, which puts her human at ease when they arrive.

Rather than just being an empty field (which there is nothing wrong with, these are still very useful!) the Pawesome Paddock has fantastic equipment in their fields and one is even dedicated separately to agility equipment.

Price depends on the number of dogs or the length of your visit with prices starting for 1-4 dogs at £10 for an hour, 5-6 dogs £15, but if you have even more dogs than that, or you would like to make use of the field for longer than an hour you can still book to hire at a slightly higher cost.

Maz and her sister Flo love sniffing and zooming around and give it a pawfect paw rating of 5/5!

Unleashed at Wrenbury Hall Woods

Rico and Maisy sat by the lake at Unleashed at Wrenbury Hall Woods

Location: Wrenbury, CW5 8EJ

Spread over 3 acres and with its own lake, Unleashed at Wrenbury Hall Woods is one of the more established private hire fields in the local area. Describing itself as a “dog adventure park” there are various obstacles including; tunnels, balance beams and jumps for your dog to explore during their visit.

The large lake is up to 2 metres deep in parts, but with some lower entrance points it is an ideal place to build your pup’s confidence in how to swim, or simply just paddle to cool their paws down during the hotter weather.

For the more sociable dogs there is also the option of attending group socialisation sessions that are hosted by owner Jess on a weekend (human children need to remain at home). Social sessions are split into: puppy, small dog and larger dogs, or on special occasions like bank holidays, for certain breeds. Socialisation sessions are £5 and last for an hour.

For those dogs who would prefer to enjoy the facilities on their own, or with just select dog friends then private hire is £20 for an hour which covers up to 4 dogs. Additional dogs can be booked at £5 per dog.

To book either a socialisation session or a private hire slot visit the website:

Finbar’s Friends

Location: Tattenhall, CH3 9NH

This little known gem was brought to our attention by tiny Chester the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and his humans.

Really a home from home boarding establishment business, this private hire field has 6ft high fencing and the entrance is double gated. Owner Jo contacted us to let us know that the fencing even goes under ground so that dogs can’t push or dig under it. Being awarded a 5 star rating by Cheshire West and Chester Council this is an ideal place for local dogs to enjoy themselves and practice their Parkour moves due to the range of equipment in the fields.

Marbury Camp and Lodge

Entrance to Marbury Camp and Lodge's Dog Walking Field

Location:  Marbury, just outside of Whitchurch, SY13 4LY

At just £3.50 for 30 minutes with 2 dogs, this is one of the cheapest private hire fields we have found.

Although we visited during a torrential down pour, we were still given a warm welcome by the owner and Rico and Maisy still had great fun running around chasing their new Tug-E-Nuff toys to practice their recall skills.

The field is not guaranteed to be secure according to the website, and as the fences are around 4 ft high it would potentially be possible for a dog to clear them so if you know you have a dog that has a tendency to jump fences and be a bit of a Houdini, then this isn’t the private hire field for you, but the website does let you know that no dogs have escaped yet! Let’s help them keep it that way!

Being part of a campsite you do need to book as those staying on the site may also have plans to use the field during their visit.

If your dog needs a place to practice their recall before you let them off on walks, then this is the ideal spot. No additional distractions or lakes to disappear into and near the local Cholmondeley Arms dog friendly pub for when you’ve earnt a drink after your training!

The Dogs Paddocks Market Drayton

The last of the guest reviews and private hire fields for this blog comes from Pretty Piper one of my current No Nonsense Nosework clients.

Her favourite local dog field is The Dogs Paddocks in Market Drayton.

Only opening in August 2020 this is a new addition to the local area and one that dog owners are loving!

This secure exercise area is £10 per hour for 1 – 4 dogs, or £15 if you have 5-8 dogs. With opening hours from 6am to 9pm this private hire field has been an absolute blessing for local dog owners during the heat wave. Giving them a safe place to let their dogs run around before the temperatures got too hot and also avoiding the dreaded tarmac that can get too hot for those paws.

You will need to register to use the field but when you have you can book online here:   Market Drayton – The Dogs Paddocks (thedogspaddocksmarketdrayton.co.uk)

The same owners also have fields in Middlewich and Adlington so perhaps Nose to Trail needs to do a follow up blog with more fields for you in the future. If you know of any more private hire fields that we should be telling our customers about then please do get in touch by emailing info@nosetotrail.co.uk to let me know. I’m always happy to take Rico and Maisy to visit some more if you don’t have any photos you would be happy for us to share.

If you do visit one of these fields with your dog to practice their training then pop a comment below and let me know how you got on. Progress photos and videos are ALWAYS welcome!

Happy Training!
